Kingstonian midfielder Matt Gray insists there will be no love lost should he face former club Sutton United in the Ryman League Premier Division play-offs come May.

The 26-year-old smashed in a second-half winner - his fourth goal of the season - as Ks completed the double over Billericay Town with a 2-1 win at Kingsmeadow on Saturday.

Kingstonian’s fine form since an opening salvo of four straight defeats since lifting the Ryman League Division One South title, sees them as hot favourites to secure a play-off spot.

Gray graduated from the Gander Green Lane youth team set-up to become a first-team stalwart at the then-Blue Square South side, before switching to Woking in 2007 in a £10,000 deal.

United are themselves well positioned to secure a top five finish, but Gray is only focused on getting his new club to the promised land of promotion.

“We are just concentrating on finishing in the top five at the moment and want to finish as high as possible. If that means playing against Sutton then so be it,” he said.

“I had good times at United and still have a lot of friends at the club - including members of the board - but at the end of the day I’m a Ks player now.

“If it came down to me having to take the winning spot-kick to get us promoted ahead of them, I’d want to score.

“I’d feel bad for them, but of course I’d want to win for Kingstonian.”

Gray has played a major role in reviving Kingstonian’s fortunes since arriving from Carshalton Athletic earlier in the season, despite boss Alan Dowson being advised by many in the non-League game not to take on the fun-loving playmaker.

The Kingsmeadow chief has described the former Cards star as a pleasure to work with and for Gray the feeling is mutual.

“I’m enjoying things under Dowse. I’d heard he could be a bit of a Sergeant Major type, but he has given me responsibility to organise things and it is working well,” added the wing-back.

“I’d heard he was a great coach and when I got the call after leaving Carshalton I didn’t think twice. He’ll travel half way across the country to do anything for anyone.”

Ks take on Cray Wanderers at the weekend and Gray is after a repeat performance of the form that saw Ks bounce straight back from last week’s defeat to Harrow Borough.

“Maybe we underestimated Harrow, but we had the chances to score goals and should have won,” he said.

“It was nice to get straight back to winning ways and it is something we must continue.”

Kingstonian’s next three games: Feb 20 Cray Wanderers (a), 25 Wealdstone (h), 27 Tonbridge Angels (a).
