Kingstonian 4 Boreham Wood 1
Kingstonian's Ryman League Premier Division wobble - four games without a win - ended with what turned out to be a comprehensive walloping of play-off rivals Boreham Wood at Kingsmeadow on Sunday.
It didn't look like that at the break. Ks had taken an early lead through striker Bobby Traynor, but the visitors equalised and were threatening to take the lead.
But a goal from skipper Francis Duku, his first for Ks, at the beginning of the second half seemed to calm nerves and, when Christian Jolley made it three from long-range, Ks were cruising.
With a minute to go, a Simon Huckle header resulted in Ks' best result of 2010.
They now have a midweek break but return to their promotion challenge this Saturday, when they travel to Ruislip to take on Wealdstone.
On just five minutes, Ks made the best possible start, when Matt Gray's free-kick from the right found BOBBY TRAYNOR on the near post and his header sailed past a full-stretch Tony Tucker.
But the Wood hit back with some vengeance. Six minutes later, winger Chris Watters took off down the left, finding Lee Allinson on the near post but his first-time strike was pushed over by an alert Rob Tolfrey.
Then a cheeky backheel from striker Jon Clements set Allinson completely free in the Ks goalmouth but he shot wide, much to his own amazement.
Dean Lodge took off on a mazy run out to the right and sent in near post cross that was held by Tucker with Traynor on hand.
Then Gray swung in a powerfully struck cross from the right that was only half-cleared to Bashiru Alimi but his drive was blocked.
Then the visitors resumed some serious pressure which was crowned on 25 minutes when a corner from the right from skipper Mario Notu found an unmarked GREG MORGAN on the far post and his header floated home on the near post.
Just before the break, Watters sized up an edge of the Ks box free-kick but he struck it straight into the arms of a well-placed Tolfrey.
Manager Alan Dowson's half-time talk must have done the trick because Ks came out a different side after the break.
On just 47 minutes, Mo Harkin took off down the right, pushing the ball up to Lodge, who was racing into the Wood box and he whipped in a pacy drive that was only just wide of the far post.
On 56 minutes, Ks resumed the lead, when Gray sent in a high free-kick from way out on the left that travelled untouched through the Wood box, finding a high-stepping FRANCIS DUKU on the far post and he neatly tapped the ball home from close quarters.
The Wood almost came straight back into the game when an Allinson free-kick was flicked in for Bradley Fraser close in but Tolfrey made a fine point-blank block.
Jolley replied with a run down the left, he cut in, but his well-struck low cross was smothered by Tucker on the near post.
Then a lightning move from sub Carl Wilson-Denis took off down the right, finding Traynor deep in the Wood box but he fired into the side-netting, holding his face in frustration.
Then a Gray free-kick from the right saw Ks man of the match Adam Thompson head over.
With nine minutes to the break, CHRISTIAN JOLLEY cut in from the right flank and, from distance, let loose a ferocious strike that struck the far post on its way home past an unsighted Tucker.
A Harkin run saw him find Alimi deep in the away box but his shot was deflected wide.
Then Wilson-Denis, who had an inspirational cameo, broke down the middle of the park into the Wood box, dropped a shoulder to the right and tried to direct the ball past Tucker, who did superbly well to fingertip the ball out.
With a minute to go, a Gray free-kick from the right saw an unmarked SIMON HUCKLE dart in on the blind side of the Wood defence and head past a stranded Tucker on the far post.
It just wasn't the Wood's afternoon when sub Jay Brett found himself free in the Ks box in additional time but he knocked the ball forward allowing to Tolfrey to mop up.
