Chairman Steve Adkins insists Tooting & Mitcham have a bright future despite the departures of boss Billy Smith and his assistant George Wakeling.

Smith cited budget cuts as the reason for quitting, but Adkins insists there is no reason why the Terrors’ first team should not remain strong.

Adkins said: “The future of the club is strong. We have relooked at and strengthened our football development plan, creating pathways through from children to our academy, youth, reserve and first teams.

“We are progressing with the construction of a new 3G all-weather pitch and initial funding is in place for our new multi-sports hall.

“Even in these tough times were able to produce a competive budget that will allow for a powerful first team with a strong and capable management to support them in a sustainable way, which takes account our entire football plan.

“We look forward to even greater achievements during the 2010-11 season.”

Adkins thanked Smith and Wakeling for their successes over the past four years, which have included promotion to the Ryman Premier League, victories in the Surrey Senior and London Senior Cups and, this season, reaching the first round proper of the FA Cup for the first time in 33 years.

He added: “In his playing days, Billy was captain of the club and his love of Tooting & Mitcham has endured throughout his career. George’s role in the management team has been formidable.”
