Kingstonian boss Alan Dowson has warned his players they will regret it for the rest of their lives if they fail to clinch promotion at Boreham Wood on Saturday.

A Bobby Traynor double helped Ks to a 4-2 win at Sutton United on Tuesday night to set-up the weekend’s Ryman League Premier Division play-off final decider in north London.

Dowson, made 55 appearances in the Football League as a professional, claimed it was one of the biggest results of his football career but admits elevation to the Blue Square South will rate as his finest achievement in the game.

And the Kingsmeadow chief, who turned his side’s fortunes around after four straight defeats at the start of the campaign, reckons it should feel the same to his men.

“It is an oppounity for us at the weekend because we have beaten them twice before, but the truth of the matter is if we are not up for it we will lose,” he said.

“I’ve never been in a play-off final before so to me it is just another game on another nice pitch.

“Tuesday night will mean nothing if we don’t win at the weekend. It was a great night for the football club, but if the players fail they will regret it for the rest of their lives.

“It was one of the biggest nights I’ve had in football to come here and beat Sutton, but Saturday will be the biggest game of my life and it should feel like that to the players as well.”

No regrets was the theme of Dowson’s half-time team talk that saw his side turn a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 triumph against Sutton.

But assistant Mark Hams refused to get carried away and emphasised the need to stay focused.

“It is not the right time to celebrate, but it is the right time to be pleased because you don’t get many nights like that in football,” he added.

“I’ve never been so pleased to be able to approach a Thursday training session, because if we’d lost on Tuesday our season was over.

“It gives us a chance to put a lid on things, not be flat and get that fine line between being exhilarated and keeping our feet on the ground.

“Boreham Wood have got a top, top manager and they have some superstars like Mario Noto, and if you let your guard down against sides like that they will turn you over.”
