Mark Beard has urged Tooting & Mitcham to play their normal game when they head to near-neighbours Carshalton Athletic for a Ryman Premier derby clash this weekend.

The Terrors will head to Colston Avenue in good heart after dumping Walton Casuals 4-1 in the FA Cup First Qualifying Round on Saturday, earning a home date with Staines Town on 25 September.

And Beard feels the team who deals with the occasion best is likely to come out on top.

He said: “I know it is a big derby game and it means a lot to the fans but we cannot treat it that way.

“Obviously I will make the players aware about bragging rights and all that, but the truth is when the whistle goes it is just like any other game.

“If you do not do the ugly stuff you can be out of the game pretty quickly and we have to be ready for that challenge.”

Tooting went goal crazy at the weekend, seeing off the Ryman Division One South Stags with ease.

And Beard was satisfied with how his side had responded, with goals from Karl Beckford (two), Rob Haworth and academy youngster Reece Hall proving decisive.

He added: “It could have been a banana skin and Walton were up for it.

“We knew they were going to come at us in the first half hour and we had to match them physically.

“But as soon as we got the first goal it became a lot easier for us and it was fairly comfortable in the end.”

The win sets up a clash with Blue Square South side Staines.

And the Tooting boss is relishing that occasion.

Beard added: “We will give it a go.

“We will be the underdogs and there will be no pressure on us and I am really looking forward to it.”

Tooting & Mitcham’s next three matches: Sep 18 Carshalton Athletic (a), 21 AFC Hornchurch (h), 25 Staines Town (FAC, h )
