Mark Butler reckons Carshalton Athletic have found the winning formula after the Robins battled to their second come-from-behind win in the space of four days at the weekend.
The late 2-1 win over Tunbridge Wells eased Carshalton into the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Cup, where they will travel to East Thurrock United.
And, having backed up the 3-2 win over Tonbridge Angels with the cup success, Butler insists his side have the guts to succeed.
He said: “Although they were two late wins they were very different wins.
“Against Tonbridge we really had to battle, but at the weekend we were clearly the better team and it was a case of sticking to our principles.
“We had to keep plugging away and keep our discipline.
“Everyone in the team had exactly the right attitude, which was they were not going to allow the game to slip away.
“It would have been very easy for the players to feel sorry for themselves , but we kept the pressure on and got our rewards.
“There was no way you could call it a lucky escape and I am delighted with how the players stepped up.”
Joel Ledgister and Byron Harrison got Saturday’s goals, setting up a trip to East Thurrock.
And Butler is expecting another tough test.
He added: “They are a league below us, but are top of that league.
“They are in the habit of winning and it will be very difficult for us.
“We need to go there with the belief that we can get a result, but not stroll around waiting for things to happen.”
Up first though is Saturday’s Ryman Premier derby with Tooting & Mitcham, another game the Robins boss is eagerly anticipating.
Butler added: “I know Mark Beard very well and in many ways we are very similar.
“We are both new bosses who have had to put new teams together.
“We have both had similar starts to the season and it should be a good game.”
Carshalton Athletic’s next three matches: Sep 18 Tooting & Mitcham (h), 20 Wealdstone (a), 25 East Thurrock United (FAC, a)
