Hampton & Richmond Borough boss Mark Harper has told his striker they have less than a week to impress him or he will dip into the transfer market.

Dave Tarpey, Stuart Duff, Charlie Moone, Dan Thompson and Gustavo Sousa Mota have all been tried out up-front in pre-season as the Beveree chief bids to replace the likes of Ian Hodges.

Harper has strengthened significantly at the back with the arrivals of Callum Stewart, Lewis Ferrell and Matt Rugby, but it is up top where he fears he is light with the season kicking off next week.

And the Beavers boss has vowed to recruit fresh blood unless his men can add end product to their industry on the training ground this week.

“Defensively we are looking strong as a unit, but at the moment I don’t know where the goals are going to come from,” he admitted this week.

“I cannot fault the guys for their commitment and hard work, but the quality is not where I want it to be the moment I think.

“We are going to work on a few things in training and hopefully things will be all right. If they are not I’ll have to look elsewhere.”

Hampton lost 3-0 to Chelsea on Saturday before crashing 3-2 at Lewes on Tuesday night - which featured strikes from Tarpey and Sousa Mota as they made their cases.

And Harper, who has seen his men play Brentford, QPR, Stevenage and the Blues this summer, is concerned his team could be under-cooked when they host Bromley next week.

“While the fixtures we have had have been great for our fitness we have spent a lot of time chasing shadows,” he added.

“It means we have not been able to work a great deal on patterns and style of play because we simply haven’t had the ball.

“That was shown up in the game against Lewes and while the matches we’ve had have been good for crowds I think we need more matches against teams around our level next year.”

The Beveree facilities were to blame when midifelder Jamie Simmonds suffered a twisted knee after tangling with the club’s pitch-side sprinkler system.
