Kingstonian new boy Jamie Byatt is just happy to be playing football after scoring in only his second appearance since returning to Kingsmeadow last week.

Byatt netted the equaliser in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw at Bury Town having made his debut off the bench in Saturday’s heartbreaking 2-1 defeat at Margate.

The midfielder quit Merstham for Ks after just two matches having switched to the Ryman Division One South side from Premier League Tooting & Mitcham earlier this month.

And now Byatt, in his second spell with the club, wants to settle down at somewhere he is familiar with.

“Merstham was a drop down and I decided I needed to be playing at the highest level I could. I have nothing against them,” he said.

“I’ve been at Ks before and still knew a few faces down there so it seemed the best option.

“I just want to crack on with enjoying my football again.”

Tuesday’s draw ended a run of three straight defeats and Byatt believes it could be a sign things will continue to improve.

“You can see the club still has a good chance of making the play-offs if we can put a run together,” he added.

Meanwhile, assistant boss Mark Hams has insisted his spell in the hot seat is temporary, while manager Alan Dowson recovers from some health problems.

Hams was in charge for Satuday’s last-gasp defeat, which came via a 93rd minute winner from the hosts after a Bobby Traynor penalty had levelled things up following Gary MacDonald’s early own goal.

He said: “I need to make it clear that as far as I’m concerned he is the manager of this football club.

“He’s got to do what’s right for him.

“As much as we all love the games, and we hate losing, and it means a lot to us, it’s more important that he gets himself straight.”
