Boss Alan Dowson has raised fears star striker Bobby Traynor may have played his last game for Ks.
The 28-year-old has not featured in three pre-season friendlies thus far – including Monday’s night’s 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at Kingsmeadow.
Dowson tried Craig Mullen, Wade Small, Allan Tait and Andre McCollin up front against Spurs – with the latter netting a late penalty – as he bids to beef up his goalscoring options
Traynor, who joined the club in 2007 from Walton & Hersham, has scored 154 goals in 256 appearances for Ks during a five-year spell at the club.
And Dowson admitted the unthinkable – that he may have to prepare for the forthcoming Ryman Premier League campaign without his talismanic frontman.
“Bobby has just got married and has been working his socks off in terms of his work commitments,” he said.
“He has not been able to get to pre-season and is struggling to commit to games, so may jack it in.
“Bobby has been a tremendous servant to this club, but we are looking at other options because we are not sure where we stand with him at the minute.”
Meanwhile, Dowson has slammed Carshalton Athletic’s compensation offer for Tom Bird as way off the mark and vowed to take the matter to an FA tribunal.
The 23-year-old appeared for the Robins in a 3-2 behind-closed-doors pre-season friendly win over Dulwich Hamlet and boss Paul Dipre is believed to have agreed terms with the former Fleet Town man.
“Because Tom is under 24 years old we would be entitled to compensation for the players,” fumed Dowson, who had hoped Bird would sign for a professional club this season.
“We believe he is a £50,000 player and Carshalton’s offer is way, way below that. We’ve put a lot of work into him.
“We’ve had a lot of other clubs interested in him and we will be taking this to a tribunal. We are preparing as strong a case as we can.”
