Old Meadonians 1 (McCombe) Bealonians 1 (Sawyer)
Old Meadonians kept their Amateur Football Combination Premier Division title hopes tenuously alive with a seat-of-their-pants draw with league leaders Bealonians at Riverside Lands on Saturday, scoring a last-minute equaliser in what can only be called a scrappy affair.
Hit by injuries to three keepers, Meads were indebted to veteran utility man Dan Salanson for turning out in goal and dealing competently with most of what came his way.
What he was unable to do was to inspire greater effort in front of him, where it did seem that the hosts were pinning their hopes of success this season on winning the AFA Senior Cup.
Beals broke the deadlock on 30 minutes, when Gary Bryson beat the off-side trap to find Ian Sawyer lurking suspiciously on the edge of the area.
Salanson's race off his line was in vain as Sawyer found the top corner.
Meads stepped up a gear on the restart of what was to be mostly similar fare.
Centre-back Alastair McCombe's diving header from Ed Glover's in-swinging corner saved the day at the last gasp.
Meads: Salanson, McCombe, McGuinness, Wolfe, Palmer, Glover, Quinn, W.Gerrish, Lovell, Smith, Eguae.
