London Welsh failed to convert pressure into points and had to settle for a losing bonus point at Sedgley Park on Saturday, writes Vicky Cheavers.
Welsh started strongly and Chris Ritchie scored their first try via a catch and drive after a line-out. Sam Ulph converted.
But some abysmal defending allowed Sedgley Park to race into the lead thanks to two tries.
Ritchie scored another catch-and-drive try in the 17th minute, again converted by Ulph.
A great defensive combination of James Strong and Sam Ulph between them managed to stop Sedgley Park from scoring again, but just before half time, they were successful by scoring in the right corner to make it 19-14.
Welsh again started strongly in the second half, but 15 minutes of sustained pressure on the home side's tryline failed to come to fruition.
Ulph kicked a penalty in the 61st minute to narrow the points gap, and Welsh finally went into the lead on the 66th minute again thanks to Ulph slotting another penalty kick between the uprights.
However the lead changed hands again, as Phil Jones kicked a penalty of his own for the hosts.
The remainder of the half was spent within the 10m lines, with neither side looking to break the duck.
It was a done deal for Sedgley Park, who in the first minute of injury time scored their bonus point try. Luckily the conversion was missed to enable Welsh to take away the losing bonus point.
