Russell Banyard made it a family affair after scoring Banstead Athletic's winner against Reading Town on Saturday - to the delight of boss and older brother Graeme.

The 21-year-old netted with 15 minutes remaining as Athletic edged it 4-3 to sneak into the top six of the Combined Counties Premier Division.

The result came hours after the Merland Rise chief had been named Southern Counties Radio's manager of the month for October after bagging four wins and a draw in the league.

It means Banstead have won 10 of their past 12 games after a dreadful start to the season saw them lose their first five competitive matches.

The run has come on the back of 25 goals from Paul Hunt and Marcus Campbell, but Banyard senior is pleased his younger brother has finally come to the party.

"Russell has only just come back from eight months coaching in America and is definitely there on merit," he said.

"He would be the first to admit it if he wasn't playing well and needed to be dropped.

"It has been good winning and winning well.

"It was always going to take a bit of time to get the team playing because we are pretty much a brand new side.

"Now I have got two or three players champing at the bit to get in the starting line-up, which is a nice problem to have."

Banstead twice came from behind through Campbell and Mike Lyons to go in at half-time with the score all square at 2-2.

Campbell scored his seventh goal in three games to give his side the lead for the first time soon after the break, but Reading levelled matters before Banyard junior grabbed the deciding goal.
