Gold medals came at the double for young athletes Sophie Mace and Pippa Earley at the Surrey Indoor Championships at the weekend.
Walton Athletics Club throwing star Mace, 14, became a double shot put champion throwing 11.70metres to win the U15 girls’ 3.25kg title at Sutton Arena before stepping up an age group to claim the U17 girls’ 4kg crown with a throw of 10.88m.
Kingston AC & Polytechnic Harrier Earley notched 4.51 metres to win the U13 girls’ long jump, having clocked a personal best 8.43 seconds to win the 60m sprint.
Kingston’s Rhianna Reynolds, below, jumped 4.41m to win the U15 girls’ long jump, while Andre Nembhard, 28, clocked 6.99 to come third in the senior men’s 60m sprint.
Clubmate Loic Malroux won the senior men’s 60m hurdles with a personal best 9.1secs, was second in the men’s pole vault with a clearance of 3.80m and won the long jump with a leap of 6.25m.
Clubmate Lisa O’Brien clocked 9.75secs to claim silver in the U20 women’s 60m hurdles, jumped 10.20m to win the triple jump and cleared 1.35m to claim high jump gold.
Walton’s Sawatomo Yamakawa leapt 5.12m in the U15 boys’ long jump to grab silver as he finished four centimetres short of the winner’s mark.
