Sutton Tennis & Squash Club are celebrating after they clinched the Aegon Team Tennis National Open Men’s title for the first time since 2009.
The Devonshire Road-based club went into the competition, held in Bournemouth, as favourites, and they breezed past Manchester Northern in the quarter-finals, winning 8-0.
In the semi-final, against the 2010 champions and south London rivals Bromley, the Sutton team of Evan Hoyt, Jack Carpenter, Alex Slabinsky, James Ireland, John Richards and Adam Thornton-Brown won 8-4.
Sunday’s final against Mackintosh LTC from Cardiff was a tense affair with Sutton edging the final doubles rubber to clinch a 7-6 win and the £7,000 prize money.
Team captain Steve Tiddy said: “This has been one of the best seasons we have had in recent years. The players’ commitment has been excellent.”
Slabinsky said: “There were some tough matches, and it has been really hot on the court. There was a lot of drama in the final, but it has been a really good few days.”
