London Broncos take on Wigan Warriors in the Challenge Cup semi-final on Saturday looking to return to Wembley, and their first Challenge Cup final since 1999.
The Broncos booked their place in the showpiece match courtesy of a 29-10 victory over Sheffield Eagles in a cup run that has also accounted for Featherstone Rovers and Bradford Bulls.
When the Broncos last got to this stage of rugby league’s oldest competition more than 10 years ago, a victory over the Castleford Tigers saw the team progress all the way to the final.
Unfortunately a Leeds Rhinos team that contained the likes of Martin Offiah, Shaun Edwards and Steele Retchless were too strong for the Broncos in what was the last game of rugby league to be played at the old Wembley.
The season before, the Broncos also made it through to the semi-final, incidentally against this weekends opponents, however the Warriors were victorious that day.
Wigan, who won the two previous meetings between the sides in this season’s Super League, have a rich history in this competition, having won the famous trophy 18 times.
Despite an indifferent season, which has seen the Broncos fall to the bottom of the Super league table, the team’s performances in the Challenge Cup have been consistently positive.
And this year’s side will be hoping to draw on the spirit of the 1999 London Broncos vintage in making it through to the sport's showpiece occasion.
For those wishing to attend this weekend’s game, the club are running an official coach service to and from the Leigh Sports Village stadium in Manchester.
