Sutton & District’s world championship bound Harry Aikines-Areetey was just glad to be part of the prestigious London Anniversary Games Diamond League event at London Olympic Stadium, Stratford last Friday.

The 24-year-old, who will be in Team GB’s men’s 4x100m relay squad for the championships in Moscow, had victory snatched away from him right on the line by Adam Gemili in the 100m B race with both clocking 10.16secs.

“I actually thought I won that race,” said Aikines-Areetey, who will now spend the next two weeks preparing with the rest of his Team GB colleagues before heading out to the Russian capital for IAAF World Championships.

“I gave Adam a good race, I gave him a good target but unfortunately I tired at the end. I’m in form so I’m happy at my 10.16.”

With memories of London 2012 still fresh in their memories, 65,000 spectators packed out the Olympic Stadium on that electric Friday evening.

“I’m just here for the enjoyment,” added Aikines-Areetey. “To be here today to see an amazing crowd and run a decent race.”
