In a week that has provided some classic moments so far, we look back at a couple of them here as well as selections for the final day of Royal Ascot.
Thursday brought the Queen’s horse Estimate back to Royal Ascot to compete in the Gold Cup. In a thrilling race that at one point had the 4 leaders bunched next to each other, Estimate and odds-on favourite Leading Light came clear into the final furlong alongside 40/1 outside Missunited, Leading Light wobbled before putting in a final burst of speed to beat Estimate by a neck in what was a memorable encounter.
Wednesday was the debut of Treve on UK shores. The filly from France was the best rated horse in the world in 2013, but she did not cope well with a drop from 1m4f to 1m2f and was seen off by The Fugue in style as she pulled away from 2nd placed Irish horse Magician, Treve and Mukhadram to take the Group 1 race.
Tuesday brought some top quality racing. With Toronado defeating Verrazano in a strongly run opening race to the meeting, the day started well for the favourite backers. The racing continued on into the afternoon, and in a highly-anticipated rematch from the 2000 Guineas, Kingman and Night of Thunder faced off. Kingman had since taken the Irish 2000 Guineas and thrashed Night of Thunder by over 2 lengths to confirm the horse as one of John Gosden’s best of his current crop, and one of the best racehorses in the country this year.
Saturday brings the final day of racing at the Festival, and the final Group One of the week is the Diamond Jubilee Stakes over 6 furlongs. The favourite Slade Power was only 7th in this last year but has been a better horse since that appearance. My pick would be the 2nd favourite Aljamaaheer who is trained by Roger Varian and has strong Course form though didn’t have a great seasonal reappearance over this distance at Newmarket in April.
