Alan Forsyth’s arrival at Great Britain level is views as long overdue in some quarters and the flying Scotsman proved his point this week.
The 23-year-old Scotland international marked his GB debut with a goal in Monday’s 3-2 Test defeat to Argentina at Bisham Abbey.
Forsyth levelled the south Americans’ opening goal before Sam Ward gave the hosts a lead they were unable to hold on to.
Head coach Bobby Crutchley admitted his contribution – and that of Surbiton captain Chris Grassick – was the highlight for his men.
“We scored a couple of nice goals. It’s great to see Alan Forsyth score on his debut we’re all really pleased for him,” he said.
“He’s deserved that with the work he’s done since he came into the programme.
“It’s lovely to see him win his first cap and pick up his first goal. That’s the highlight for us.”
He added: “There was good play in there but it wasn’t the key things. Chris Grassick was intense around the pitch which was nice to see and there were some good bits, but they were not enough.”
Forsyth’s effort was actually a little below par as he averages more than two goals per game in domestci action this season.
He took his season’s haul to 14 in six MHL Premier Division matches on Saturday as Surbiton edged out Reading 5-4 at Sugden Road Forsyth’s 13th goal of the campaign put Surbiton ahead but head coach Todd Williams’ men soon trailed 3-1.
It took a Matt Daly brace, another from Forsyth and one from Scott Evans to secure the spoils.
There was no such problem for the club’s women as they crushed the same opposition 7-0, through goals from Rebecca Herbert (two), Charlotte Calnan (two), Hannah Coulson, Sandra Roche and Giselle Ansley.
Surbiton’s men top their table ahead of Sunday’s visit from Hampstead & Westminster, while the women are second and go to Leicester on Saturday.
