Surbiton Ladies saw their 41 game unbeaten domestic record ended on Sunday as they were knocked out of the Women’s Cup and lost first team regular Charlotte Calnan to injury.
Head coach Brett Garrard’s team suffered a shock 1-0 defeat at South Clubs’ Women’s Hockey League Division One Barnes as the holders crashed out at the second round stage.
It was the current Women’s Hockey League Premier Division champions first defeat in any domestic competition since a 2-0 home league defeat to Leicester in February, 2014.
It was their first defeat in the cup since 2-1 third round defeat at Sutton Coldfield in in October 2012.
Barnes grabbed the lead from a penalty corner early in the second half and then held on for a famous victory, that saw Surbiton’s Calnan carried off late on with a serious looking ankle problem.
The defeat came 24 hours after Surbiton beat Leicester 2-0 - through goals from Jenna Woolven and Jo Hunter - to stay second in the league standings.
Surbiton, who had hoped to win the league, cup and the EuroHockey Club Championship this season, have a weekend off to lick their wounds as they prepare to host Holcombe in the league on November 7.
