Surbiton’s Moe Sbihi and his Team GB men’s four crew begin final preparations for the Olympic Games knowing a gold medal is theirs to lose.
Molesey Boat Club’s Sbihi, George Nash, Constantine Louloudis and Alex Gregory won the final World Cup regatta of the summer ahead of August’s main event in Brazil.
They clocked five minutes 42.79 seconds to beat world champions Italy into second and long-time rivals Australia into third.
It was the crew’s third golden success of the summer after winning the European Championship and the second World Cup regatta – both in May – having skipped April’s first World Cup meet.
They dominated Sunday's race from start to finish to lead through all the timing points before claiming victory by a length – an advantage they had maintained from the midway point.
Former Hollyfield School student Sbihi, 28, said: “You talk about scenarios pre-race and you are nervous because you don’t know what might happen. But we stuck to the plan and that felt good.”
Molesey clubmate Nash added: “That was good. That was very, very aggressive from us.
“We have a lot of respect for our opponents and know what they could do to us but it was humming, really humming. We really enjoyed going out there and giving it a go."
Team GB, who won five golds at the weekend, now enter their final training camp in good shape for the trip to Rio.
The men’s four is the same boat Sir Steve Redgrave made his name in and is the blue-ribboned event of the Olympic regatta where sporting immortality awaits.
London 2012 men’s four gold medal winner Gregory added: “That was the first time this season we have moved into our race rhythm and felt what we have felt in training.
“Now we go away to training camp where none of life’s distractions interfere and we can be totally focused.”
