Surbiton Hockey Club’s Georgie Twigg has backed club captain Sarah Haycroft to be an Olympian one day.
The Sugden Road skipper did not make the cut for the Team GB squad heading to Rio next week, while clubmates Twigg, Giselle Ansley and Hollie Webb are bound for Brazil.
Haycroft has been a regular in the squad over the past two seasons and Twigg is confident her time will come.
“Sarah has been training with us, bless her, even since selection,” said Twigg at Bisham Abbey.
“She is a young, exciting talent and she will be at the next Olympics I’m sure of it.
“It is heartbreaking for those not selected, but she has been fantastic in supporting us.”
The squad fly to South America on Wednesday and Twigg insisted she never considered giving up on her Olympic dream over fears surrounding the Zika virus.
“We had talks regularly from the doctors and we have all the mosquito repellents,” she added.
“As long as we are careful we’re all quite young and not getting pregnant any time soon.
“There are always things going on, and for us it is about getting there and playing hockey.”
