Harlequins RL prop Gareth Haggerty is hoping he can erase the memory of relegation last season by proving he is more than just a bit part player at the Stoop this season.

The 26-year-old Irishman, was part of the Salford City Reds side that slipped out of Super League with a whimper last year.

The former Great Britain amateur international has targeted a spot in Ireland's World Cup squad at the end of the season.

But first Kingston-based Haggerty wants to shed his label as an impact player by cementing a regular first team slot in Brian McDermott's team.

"No player wants the label of having been relegated, but unfortunately I have got that now. It was very frustrating, probably the worst season of my life," he said.

"I like bashing folk around and Brian knows that, but I have got a lot of other things in my game. I have always been known as a big impact player, but I would like to cement a regular starting place.

"I don't mind coming off the bench, but I have got the World Cup in mind and I want to get a consistent year under my belt to make sure I get there."

Haggerty, who is in awe of new team-mates Henry Paul and Scott Hill, is keen to be part of Quins' development.

And he believes fellow front rower Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook will have an important part to play in that process.

"It is a big move for me. If the club can develop in the way I want to develop then I can't see any reason why I won't be here in five years time," he added.

"Louie has got plenty of potential and could go a long way in the game if he listens to some of the senior players - as long as he can stop talking for long enough!

"Hopefully, if I can teach him a thing or two, he will have a bright future in the game."
