Australian Craig Mottram, who lives in Teddington when he is in Europe, won the 10,000m at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Inviational at Stanford University, near San Francisco, on Sunday night.
Mottram clocked a lifetime best 27:34.48 seconds and dragged seven other runners to an Olympic qualifying time.
They included training partner Mo Farah, who made an impressive 10,000m debut in finishing sixth (27:44.54).
Teddington-based Farah led after 3km and stayed in front with Mottram shaowing his every step.
The first half of the race was run in 13:58.1, well off the Olympic pace of 27:50, but once the runners had done some calculating, the tempo increased and Farah took them through the sixth kilometre faster than the preceding five.
At 8km, Mottram shot ahead and stepped up the pace for the ninth kilometre, which was the fastest by three seconds.
About 600m from the finish, Mottram went into an all-out spring and reeled off the final three laps in 64.8, 61.0 and 59.2.
These included Farah who was sixth in 27:44.54.
Teddington-based Kate Reed achieved the Olympic qualifying standard in finishing ninth in the women's race (31:35.77).
Matt Ashton, a former student at St Mary's University in Twickenham, clocked a personal best time in finishing 13th in the B 10,000m (28:56.39).
