Cheam’s Ross Fisher reckons a Major victory is now within his grasp after a stunning performance at the US Open at Bethpage Black in New York.

Fisher was in contention until the final hole, having to eventually settle for fifth spot at one-under par behind surprise winner Lucas Glover, a feat that netted him a cool £171,000.

And the 28-year-old admits he is now thirsty for more success.

Fisher said: “Now I know that I can compete with the best players in the world.

“This is where you want to be as a player - to have a chance to win a major is an experience that I will never forget.

“I’m absolutely shattered - it is only my second US Open, but what an experience.”

Fisher, who also recently finished runner-up at the PGA Championship at Wentworth, shot bogeys at the 15th and 17th holes as his charge crumbled at the last.

And he has vowed to hit the putting greens as he bids to maintain his surge in form, having risen to world number 22.

He added: “I can’t wait to get home and work on my putting because if I could have sunk a couple of putts I think I could have won this comfortably.

“It’s been a really frustrating week, probably the best I have ever hit the ball tee to green.

“But I just couldn’t get it in the hole.

“A couple of the birdie chances I had got away and that kind of stopped me in my tracks, but I shows I have the mental strength to bounce back and hold a putt for an eagle.

“But overall it has been a phenomenal week and I really enjoyed it. ”
