Belgrave Harriers athletes claimed five gold medals at last weekend’s South of England Championships in Watford.

Surrey champion Alex Wright smashed 45 seconds off his age-group club record and 90 seconds off the championship best in winning the junior men’s 5,000m track walking title at Woodside Stadium.

The teenager clocked 21 minutes, 54.98 seconds, only 15 seconds outside the senior club record set by Carl Lawton 33 years ago.

Cameron Johnston won the senior pole vault (44.40m), while Set Osho showed tremendous 400m form twice improved his lifetime best to take the senior men’s gold (46.70).

He improved throughout the event, winning his heat in a season’s best 47.46, before bettering his personal best with 46.76 in the semi-final.

Teenager Matt Threadgold clocked a lifetime best 54.43 in winning the -junior men’s 400m hurdles, with Kingston & Polytechnic’s Tom Parry fourth (55.70).

Belgrave’s Martine Bomb took the senior women’s 400m hurdles, in which she was the only competitor, in (1:03.05).

Other leading Belgrave athletes: 3rd Gary Wilson (senior men’s triple jump, 15.52m). 3rd James Kelly (senior men’s 5,000m, 14:44.09). 4th Grant Sprigings (shot, 1.53m). 5th Jonathan Blackledge (senior men’s 800m 1:52.17).

There were three victories for St Mary’s Twickenham students.

Darryl Stone won the senior men’s high jump (2.05m), Jade Nicholls the senior women’s discus (50.48m) and Alistair Williamson the senior men’s hammer (59.29).

Sisters Katharine and Jessica Sparke both won medals. Katharine took silver in the senior women’s 3,000m (9:33.70) and Jessica bronze in the 1,500m (4:32.31).

Leading St Mary’s Richmond athlete: 4th Rebecca Taylor (senior women’s 3,000m, 4:39.95). 8th Grant Bridgman (junior men’s javelin, 43.39m).

Sutton & District’s Kola Adedoyin won the junior men’s triple jump with 14.84m.

Other leading Sutton & District athletes: 3rd Sarah Abrams (junior women’s long jump, 5.45m). 3rd Sarah Wellstead (senior long jump, 5.93m).

There was also a victory for Epsom & Ewell veteran Julia Machin, formerly Julia Bennett, in the senior women’s high jump (1.78m).

Other leading Epsom & Ewell athletes: 4th Emily Parker (senior women’s 400m hurdles, 1:00.27). 6th Isabel Brinsden (junior women’s 1,500m 4:51.19). Lizzie Thompson (junior women’s 400m hurdles, 1:06.38). 6th Lizzie Thompson (junior women’s 400m hurdles, 1:06.38). 7th Charmaine Johnson (women’s shot, 10.89m).

Herne Hill Harriers took second and third in the men’s 200m, thanks to Idris Ojuriye (21.62) and Sammy Mensah (21.84).

Ayamba Akim shared silver medal in the senior women’s high jump with a season’s best 1.75m.

Kingston & Polytechnic’s Mary Iheke, who made her British international debut earlier this year, clocked a lifetime best in taking silver medal in the junior women’s 400m in 55.84.

Two Hercules Wimbledon athletes just missed out on medals. Cale Edmunds was fourth in the junior men’s long jump (6.56m), with clubmate Royden John fourth in the senior event (6.76m).

Leading Walton AC athletes: 6th Susan McLoughlin (senior women’s 400, 1:02.94), 6th Kayle Price (senior women’s 100m hurdles, 15.30). 6th Allandre Johnson (senior women’s javelin, 59.09). 8th Rosie Marino (junior women’s 400m hurdles, 1:07.73).

Wandsworth schoolboy Jermaine Olasan leapt a personal best 6.94m in taking silver in the junior men’s long jump.

Olasan, who goes to Emanuel School, is the Surrey junior champion.
