Europe’s largest pro-am will have a regal air after Royal Mid Surrey professional Matthew Paget and amateur Michael Cardinal booked their place in this year’s grand final.

The Richmond-based duo won an invitation to the Virgin Atlantic PGA National Pro-Am Championship, to be held over the PGA Sultan Course at Antalya Golf Club in Turkey, by the slenderest of margins – securing their spot on a countback after tying for the lead at seven-under-par 65 at Oxfordshire’s Frilford Heath.

Paget said: “I guess we did leave it late but, when we came in, I knew we had a good back nine.

“When we saw seven-under was the mark as we came off the last, I felt quite confident.”

Ten-handicapper Cardinal, a 28-year-old who works for Disney in London, added: “I certainly didn’t expect this when I got up this morning but I am really pleased with how it went.

“I have been trying to improve my game and have quit playing football and American football to work on my golf – I’m glad I have.”

Hampton Court Palace pro Karl Wesson and 30-year-old amateur Ian Clothier will join them in Turkey from December 6-10 if they can come through their regional final at Hindhead Golf Club on July 15.

Clothier, who works in television and lives in Twickenham, took his first big step towards a luxury five-day trip to Turkey, when he won the club qualifying competition with a nett score of 65.

Meanwhile, a Hampton Court Palace pro-am has been won by Nick Redfern and amateur trio Mark Woolman, Gary Bowler and Simon Vincent.

Thirty-eight teams battled it out for a weekend for four at St Mellion International Hotel, Golf & Country Club in Cornwall.

A professional tournament was held on the same day.

Former US Tour pro James Maclean and ex-European Tour player Andrew Raitt were joint winners.

Over at Fulwell Golf Club in Hampton Hill, a star of the future smashed the course record but still missed out on victory in the English Schools National Golf Championships.

Lincolnshire 16-year-old Levi Desmond fired eight birdies and an eagle in his round of 62, three shots better than Strawberry Hill Golf Club pro Peter A Buchan managed in 1982.

But the boys’ winner was Gavin Samuel from Essex, who shots rounds of 66 and 68.

Girls’ winner Raffi Dyer from Hampshire equalled the women’s course record with a morning round of 70.
