The annual Optimist class dinghy open race meeting attracted 80 competitors to Wraysbury Lake Sailing Club on Saturday.

The only element that seemed to be lacking from the event, sponsored by Purple Marine, was wind to power the boats In the event, the weather was kind as enough of a breeze to provide a good day’s racing.

Overall winner and 2009 Thames Valley champion was Murray Hampshire of Papercourt Sailing Club, who gained a first and second place in the two races.

Wraysbury’s Robert Baddley, James Taylor and Jamie Webb acquitted themselves in the fierce main fleet, for experienced competitors aged up to 15, by taking third, fourth and fifth.

Baddeley made the most of his local knowledge to win the second of the two races.

Another local sailor, Jenny Smallwood, was just pipped to the first girl title by one point in 30.

In the regatta fleet, Thomas Newton of Wraysbury finished second to Spinnaker Sailing Club’s William Bedford.

Optimist Fleet captain Andy Newton said: “We had to close registrations for the event three weeks ago. It is a great compliment to all the club members who turned out that we are now able to handle an event of this great size.

“It was a wonderful day’s sailing and great to see the young people enjoying the competition and displaying their sailing skills.”
