New Malden-based John Troiano, 50, won gold in the foil at the European Veterans’ Fencing Championships in Balatonfured, Hungary.
Seeded fourth after the poules, Troiano stormed through the field of 35, winning his direct elimination matches 10-4, 10-2 and 10-5 on his way to the final against Klaus Haertter of Germany.
Undaunted by his opponent’s record as a former world and European veteran champion, Troiano dominated the final from the start with his long reach, fast footwork and excellent sense of distance to win his first European title 10-5.
His sights are now set on the world championships in Moscow in October.
