Sutton’s lead in the Surrey Championship Premier Division was reduced to four points after they were denied victory by a last-wicket partnership for the second week in a row, writes Mike Woods.

Saturday’s clash with closest rivals Reigate Priory at Cheam Road this Saturday could be hugely significant to the destiny of this year’s title after the champions’ convincing victory over Weybridge last weekend cranked up the pressure.

Facing a Banstead side featuring Surrey players Matt Spriegel and Scott Newman, Sutton lost opener John Fry in the first over with Richie Bedbrook also taking taking the wicket of Zobi Sharif, caught at cover by Newman with the score on 51.

Spriegel then weighed in with three wickets and, at 122-6, Sutton looked to be heading for their first defeat of the season.

However, Phil Sampson produced a captain’s knock of 82 not out, sharing in a quick-fire stand of 115 with Andy Sartor (45), as Sutton recovered to 249-7 from 63 overs. Spriegel finished with 4-82.

In reply, Sharif took excellent slip catches to remove Newman and Tom Lancefield, leaving Banstead 26-2.

Spriegel’s belligerent batting forced Sutton to work hard in the field, making a fine 83 before Sharif’s leg-spin trapped him lbw to leave Banstead 156-5.

Banstead lost their ninth wicket with six overs still to play but, just as Weybridge had done the week before, Banstead showed great defiance with Adam Clarke making 24 not out.

Sampson finished with 3-28 and Sharif with 4-46.
