Matt Spriegel has backed Banstead and Surrey team mate Scott Newman to bounce back after being told he can leave the Brown Caps on loan this summer.
The Epsom-born 29-year-old opener has scored just 217 first-class runs - including one innings of 124 - this summer and his poor run continued on Saturday as he was dismissed for eight in Banstead’s draw with Sutton.
But his 22-year-old colleague is confident Newman can recapture the form that has brought him more than 6,500 Championship runs during his career.
“He is a quality player. I’m not entirely sure of his situation, but he has proved what he can do in county cricket and I’m pretty confident he’ll be back scoring runs very soon,” he said.
“Banstead can’t complain that someone of his quality and experience is playing in their side at the moment.
“He brings so much to the team but he wants to be playing in the county championship and I’m sure he’ll be doing that soon wherever that is.”
