A 12 year-old tennis junior has won the men’s singles title at his local tennis club.
Although Nicholas Nugent was not one of the eight seeds in the draw, he knocked out the fifth, fourth and first seeds on his way a two-hour final, which he won 7-6 6-4.
Nicholas, who has just finished his first year at Hampton School, has picked up seven trophies so far this year, including three Grand Prix titles.
He also represented Surrey in the County Cup and plans to compete in this summer’s Solihull International Junior, the Bournemouth Open and the AEGON Nationals.
His mum Rosey said: “We joined Southfields LTC because it is a friendly, local club.
‘We didn’t expect him to be winning the club championships, but we are of course delighted that he has."
The Southfields LTC Annual Championships have been running since 1886, only nine years less than the world famous Wimbledon Championships which take place less than a mile away, and there were record entries for this year’s events - with more than 40 children taking part in the junior tournament.
Other winners of the club championships include: Leigh Everett (vets), Helen McFetridge (Ladies Singles), Jack Lavall (Boys U14), Katie Walsh (Girls U12), Rex Richardson (Boys U12), Tim Ridler (Boys U10) and Lara Hill (Girls U8).
