Donna Fraser admitted the emotion of competing in her last AAA Championships effected her performance at the weekend.

The 36-year-old Croydon Harrier, who retires at the end of the season, finished fourth in the 400m in an equal season's best time of 53.17 seconds but failed to make the final of the 200m, finishing second in her heat in 24.29.

"It has been quite emotional all weekend as it was my last AAAs," said the veteran.

"I was trying not to think about it but it was quite hard not to as everyone was going on about it.

"It made the whole weekend quite difficult but I have to move on from that.

"The 400m was strange and I think I could have done with three rounds as I tend to need that many to get in the groove.

"I went for it in the final and suffered in the last 50m but if I had gone off slow it would have been too hard for me to catch up at the end.

"The same with the 200m really, I tend to run a lot better when there's more rounds. It was disappointing and there were enough girls for them to run a semi-final but they chose not to."

Fraser's chances of making the World Championships in Berlin next month look slim as she slipped to eighth in the UK rankings.

However, she is hoping a good time at the Birmingham Games this weekend and then at Crystal Palace in 10 days time will put her back in the reckoning when the GB squad is announced at the end of the month.

"It's going to be hard work as everyone wants those relay spots but as I have been saying all season I just want to do my best and enjoy myself," she said.

"I don't like to say never when it comes to the individual spots as you never know what can happen but opportunities are there to be taken and I have to make sure I take them.

"Even if I don't make the World Championships I still really want to run under 53 seconds to finish my career."
