South London sailors Oscar McVeigh, Rebecca Kalderon and Rosie Sibthorp have endured mixed fortunes at the 2009 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championships in Brazil.

Frustration reigned for the RYA Volvo Team GBR sailors as the second full day of racing was lost from the schedule on Wednesday.

Following Tuesday's lay day, and having already lost a day of racing on Sunday, organisers had hoped to make up the races with a full programme in Buzios on Wednesday.

But whereas on Sunday, 30 knot breezes scuppered the event's progress, yesterday it was a lack of wind that did the damage.

It means that with just two days of racing remaining only four of the 12 scheduled races have so far been run. The discard is set to come into play after race five, which is the next scheduled race.

RYA Volvo Team GBR currently has three teams sitting in medal positions.

The top placed British team so far are Rebecca Kalderon, from Wimbledon, and Rosie Sibthorp, from Thames Ditton, who currently sit second, but level on points with Martine Soffiatti Grael – daughter of Brazilian Olympic sailing and Volvo Ocean Race legend Torben – and Kahena Kunze in the girls’ 420.

Izzy Hamilton is 3rd in the girls’ RS:X windsurfing while Hobie 16 duo Adam Butler and Nikki Boniface were also elevated up to third spot after the disqualification of the Dutch crew from race four.

Phil Sparks and Ben Gratton were left ruing a race four disqualification for a right of way infringement at the leeward mark that saw them topple from pole position in the boys’ 420 to seventh overall.

However with the discard coming into play after race five the pair will be looking to resume the dominant form that had propelled them to the top of the leaderboard.

Also harbouring a top 10 position is RS:X boys’ windsurfer Ali Masters who recovered from a jittery opening day to score 2,1 on Monday to sit in sixth. Oscar McVeigh, from Wimbledon, and Hannah Tilley lie 39th and 24th respectively in the boys’ and girls’ Radial.

The Brits currently sit second behind France in the race for the Volvo Trophy for best performing nation overall.

Three races are scheduled for all events today (Thursday), with the first started moved forward to 11:30 local time (14:30). One race is scheduled for the final race of the championship on Friday.
