Lucinda Davies may be starting her career as a team coach at Royal Mid-Surrey Golf Club, but she hasn’t entirely given up on one-day joining the professional competitive ranks.
The 23-year-old was named as the Old Deer Park club’s first female golf coach and teaching professional last month having given up the ‘perfect’ job in Egypt to return to the UK.
Davies, a member of the England women’s regional training squad for three years as a teenager, has been in the game since taking up the sport as a 12-year-old in Peterborough.
Having learnt her trade via a stint in the US and while studying for a degree in applied golf management studies at the University of Birmingham, she is out to pass on the expertise gained as head teaching professional at the Taba Heights Golf Resort on Red Sea’s Sinai Peninsula .
But that doesn’t mean she has ruled out a return to the competitive arena.
“Having played out in America for a while I know what it takes to play competitively at the highest level. You see what the top women put themselves through to get there,” she said.
“One day I would like to think I can get back up there and play professionally. I’m quite competitive by nature and have always been into sport and can’t envisage myself only teaching from now on.
“Everyone needs a goal and mine is to keep improving my own game and see where that takes me, but for the moment I’m focused on establishing myself as a successful teaching pro.”
The Royal Mid-Surrey club has always had a strong female membership and the destruction by fire of the Twickenham Road clubhouse in 2001 saw the club grant them equal rights with their male counterparts.
A move Davies believes makes the club a more welcoming place for all concerned.
“Since the fire everyone has come closer together. While the new clubhouse was built everyone was lumped together in temporary cabins. That has probably done more to bring everyone together than anything else,” she said.
“It is not a snooty place. It is a really easy going, relaxing environment that is completely accessible.”
And as the club’s first ever female professional she is comfortable to be breaking new ground with a series of free tuition sessions for women later this month.
“As a youngster I got quite good quite quickly, but there weren’t that many female golfers around at all let alone juniors. I was a real minority so there were barriers I had to over come,” she added.
“I think I’m well suited to building relationships with the female membership and can break down the misconceptions associated with golf and women to attract more females to the game.”
