Olympic silver medallist Philips Idowu overcame a world class field and the damp weather conditions to claim an excellent victory in the Meeting Areva men’s triple jump event at Stade de France, Saint-Denis, France.
The 30-year-old Belgrave Harriers star beat the higher ranked Cuban trio of Yoandris Betanzos, Alexis Copello and David Giralt with a fourth-round effort of 17.17m.
He hopes to record another victory in much better conditions at Aviva London Grand Prix meeting this Friday at Crystal Palace: “It was a high quality field but it was a bit of a weird competition due to the wet conditions,” said Idowu.
“But the main focus for me tonight was to win so I’m happy.”
“Hopefully there will be better conditions at Crystal Palace and I hope to do bigger distances in front of my home London crowd. It’s my last competition before the worlds so I do want to put on a show in front of my home London crowd.”
Fellow clubmate high jumper Samson Oni also appears at the Palace in a last chance bid to qualify for the world championships. For tickets contact 0800 0556056, other catch all the action on BBC2 from 6pm.
