Two young Wimbledon sailors have endured mixed fortunes on their Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF Youth World Championship debuts in Brazil.

Rebecca Kalderon, 17, sailed to a top-10 finish at the prestigious annual regatta in Buzios, she and crew Rosie Sibthorp from Thames Ditton ending the regatta in seventh spot overall in the girls’ 420 class.

Meanwhile, Oscar McVeigh, 18, struggled to find his feet in a large boys’ Laser Radial fleet of 53 sailors, showing glimpses of the qualities that landed him the RYA Volvo Youth National Championship title in April, on his way to 35th place in Brazil.

RYA Youth Racing Manager Duncan Truswell said: “Rosie and Rebecca will have learned some really important lessons in Brazil. Conditions didn’t favour them at certain stages of the regatta but at times they showed in the right conditions they be significant players at World level. It’s now making sure that even in their non-favoured conditions they can post competitive scores and stay in the mix at the top of the fleet.

“Some of the windy, wavier conditions we experienced did not suit Oscar who was quite a bit lighter than many of the sailors in his fleet but he too will have taken a lot from the experience, especially in terms of decision making on the racetrack and the importance of doing the basics really well for the whole regatta. That comes with putting a lot of time in on the water and he has seen first-hand what it takes to win medals at this level.”

Although the 10-strong RYA Volvo Team GBR arrives back in Britain tomorrow there will only be a short time for Kalderon to unwind before she flies to Lake Garda, Italy for the 420 class World Championships that start on Monday 27 July.

Whereas the ISAF Youth Worlds is a multiclass regatta where each country is able to enter just one boat per class, the 420 Worlds will see the best 420 sailors from every nation descend on Italy.

Truswell added: “One of the most encouraging things is that both Rebecca and Oscar have come right through the RYA pathway system from Zone Squads, through the National Junior Squad programme and into the RYA Volvo Youth Squad. This is huge testament to the work of their coaches both on the programme and in the clubs and their families.”

Around 280 of the World’s top Olympic hopefuls of the future converged on Buzios, some 100 miles north of Rio, for the prestigious annual regatta.

Multiple Olympic gold medallists Ben Ainslie, Iain Percy, Sarah Ayton and Sarah Webb are among the many high-profile Brits who have represented their country at the celebrated Under 19 event.
