Usain Bolt heads an attractive line-up in the Aviva London Grand Prix meeting at Crystal Palace this Friday and Saturday, writes Ziad Chaudry.
The 22-year-old triple Beijing Olympic champion and 100m world record holder from Trelawny, Jamaica, arrives in the capital fresh from an emphatic 9.79 seconds victory on a damp Stade de France track in Saint-Denis, near Paris, last week.
Former world record holder Tyson Gay and Asafa Powell, as well as British champion Simeon Williamson, will be among those looking to gun down the ‘Lightning Bolt’.
World record holder and Olympic 110m hurdles champion Dayron Robles, Jamaica’s Olympic 400m hurdles gold medallist Melaine Walker, pole vault queen Yelena Isinbayeva and US sprint sensation Allyson Felix are just a selection of other attendees at the two-day athletics bonanza.
It will be a big night for Brixton’s high jumper Samson Oni, who must achieve the A qualifying standard of 2.31m, while another GB squad possibility, Croydon Harriers star Donna Frasier, makes a farewell appearance in the 400m in front of her South London fans. Team-mate Martyn Rooney runs in the men’s equivalent.
Olympic silver medallist Phillips Idowu will be looking to repeat last week’s victory in Saint-Denis.
