Cobham Avorians scraped a one-wicket win in the last over of their game against Weybridge, with the light fading fast.
This was an unlikely scenario after Weybridge’s innings ended on 171 after only 54 overs. This gave the visiting team 66 overs in which to reach their target although this was reduced by eight overs following a brief stoppage for rain.
Waters and Zaf Ansari started well for Weybridge with an opening partnership of 46 before Waters (27) was caught behind by Kingsnorth of the bowling of Naylor.
Franklin was bowled by Naylor next ball who was then denied a hat-trick when the ball went through for a leg bye. Aki Ansari and Winslade fell in quick succession to Lawrence who was bowling very economically – his first session realised figures of 12 overs, 6 maidens, 2 for 20. A fifth wicket partnership of 76 between Zaf Ansari and Mann in just over the hour followed.
Ansari worked hard for his half century, as the damp ground made boundaries short in supply, before going the same way as his opening partner.
Mann fell three short of his half century in a well crafted innings before being bowled by Naylor.
The tailenders again proved that they could put bat to ball as they ensured they had a total to bowl at. Naylor finished with a five wicket haul and keeper, Kingsnorth took four catches to sandwich the innings.
Durandt was dropped on 4 off the bowling of Turner which proved costly as he went on to make 40 before he was adjudged leg before off the same bowler.
The drying outfield saw the ball cross the boundary more often especially off the pace bowlers.
Turner took four wickets in his opening spell. Jarvis joined Chapman at this juncture producing a slow but valuable half century partnership before Chapman (54) fell leg before to Mann.
Mann contained the batsmen with his marathon bowling stint of 21.2 overs, seven of which were maidens.
Ably supported by Zaf Ansari at the other end, they made Cobham work hard for their victory with only 18 runs coming off the last 12 overs. Jarvis guided the tailenders and the winning runs came as byes. Weybridge put down six catches in the innings but almost came away with a win.
Weybridge are away to Wimbledon on Saturday.
