Sutton and District’s star teenage sprinter Harry Aikines-Aryeetey produced another outstanding run when he led the British team to a clean sweep of the medals as he took the European U23s 100m title in Kaunas, Lithuania, on Friday.

Aikines-Aryeetey, who was firm favourite to take the title after being the fastest qualifier in the semi-finals, did not disappoint as he crossed the line in a season’s best of 10.15 seconds, ahead of British team-mates Leevan Yearwood (10.26) and Rion Pierre (10.28).

“That was the toughest start of my life,” said Aikines-Aryeetey after the race.

“I just ran as hard as I could. The start was so poor it was unreal. Fortunately, I came through.

“A one-two-three – that’s amazing. It shows the strength in depth we have in sprints at all levels.”

His triumph in Lithuania means he is the only British athlete to have won gold at youth, junior and U23s major championships.

Although Aikines-Aryeetey was only fourth at the trials, his time puts him in line for selection for the World Championships in Berlin next month. The British team is being announced on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, St Mary’s Twickenham student Jade Nicholls hurled the discus to a lifetime best of 54.44m to take the bronze medal with her final throw of the competition.

Their medal-winning efforts helped the British team to 18 medals, the country’s best performance of all time in the European U23s championships.

The team finished second in the medals table behind Russia.
