A tearful Donna Fraser waved goodbye to her fans on Friday night after racing for the final time at Crystal Palace.
The Croydon Harrier was given a glowing reception at her home track after finishing second in the women's 400m B final in 53.33 seconds and then confirmed her last race will be at the Gateshead Grand Prix on August 31.
"I don't normally get emotional like that but when you start hearing it you can't cope," said the 36-year-old.
"It was nice to get that reception, I didn't realise how much support I had.
"The reception I got when my name was read out before the race I was a like wow.
"You don't realise it but the support is there and I am very grateful for that.
"This race meant more to me than just getting into the relay team for the World Championships, it was about coming to my home track and coming towards the end of my career.
"I just had to run my best race and put all those emotions aside."
Fraser now faces an anxious wait to discover whether the Team GB selectors will go for experience and include her in the women's 400m relay team for the World Championships next month, but insists she won't be sat staring at her phone.
"I did that with Beijing last year saying please please please but I will not be like that this time," she said.
"I will just be having a normal week and go to work and eat my jaffa cakes.
"If I go I go and it will be fantastic to end like that, if not then ok I still had fun.
"Of course I am bothered, I am a competitor at the end of the day and I don't just get on the track to run, deep down it's just about being the best you can be.
"If I don't go yes I will be gutted watching it on television but at least I will be able to say the best team went.
"Even if I do go Gateshead will most probably be my last one as I am going on holiday on September 2."
