Brookfield Primary School Year 6 beat the bad weather last week to enjoy a school trip to the Herne Hill Velodrome, their prize for winning the Sutton Primary Schools Cycling Championships.
Brookfield’s ‘Team 1’ beat 32 other teams from 16 schools to claim victory in the fourth annual Championships.
More than 100 children took part in the cycling competition which was held earlier in the year.
Herne Hill Velodrome, the only venue from the 1948 Olympics still in use, is an outdoor track and cannot be ridden when wet. Determined not to let the weather ruin their fun, the children spent the morning learning bike handling skills with Cycling Weekly’s Keith Bingham and Velodrome manager Peter Cattermole.
Fortunately the rain held off long enough in the afternoon for all 41 children to have a go at riding track bikes on the velodrome circuit, getting their first laps under their belts. The trip was a great success despite the weather and Year 6 voted it one of their best school trips ever.
Peter Fordham, Sutton Cycling Club Chairman and the Schools Championships organiser said it was wonderful to see the children enjoying themselves and expressed his hope that some of them would take up cycling as a sport and join the club.
