Wimbledon kart racer Alfie Brown took part in the fifth round of the MSA British Championships, otherwise known as the Super One series, which were held at Nutts Corner Circuit in Co.Antrim.
Racing in the ultra competitive Cadets class, Alfie’s meeting started out in good racing conditions which was a great help to ensure that he could quickly learn the circuit described by 7 times Formula One champion John Surtees as a real drivers circuit.
Saturdays qualifyings sessions saw Alfie take a good mid field place in a session that saw only 1.76 seconds span the first to last qualifying driver. With such close competition, two tough heats then followed with Alfie finishing again with mid field places.
The finals on Sunday were guaranteed to be tough, especially as the forecasters were predicting mid afternoon thunderstorms.
The first final got away fairly unscathed but after a demanding race Alfie unfortunately did not make the progress he would have liked but in the end the experience of racing at one of Europes fastest kart racing circuits will have been a great confidence booster.
Unfortunately the weather that had been threatening did eventually burst just as the Cadets were due to go out for their second final.
As the track progressively flooded in three places the Clerk of Course Rod Taylor declared the rest of the race abandoned when it was clear that the run off onto the track was not going to end quickly.
Provisionally, points will be awarded to all drivers as if the second finals took place with the same result as the first final.
