Boxer Lenny Daws says he has learnt from his mistakes and will make an early impression when he takes on Barry Morrison for the British light-welterweight title on Friday.
The 30-year-old lost the famous Lonsdale belt to the Scotsman by a split decision in 2007 - after a slow start - and has been forced to wait nearly three years for a rematch.
Daws had been scheduled to fight world number five Ajose Olusegun on September 18 at Bethnal Green’s historic York Hall, but will now face Motherwell’s Morrison – the only man to beat the former Rosehill ABC fighter in his 21-bout career.
Defeat for either fighter could spell the end for them and the Carshalton-based father-of-three insists he will hit the canvass running when it comes to setting the record straight.
“We’ve both had shots at this title before - him more than me - so there is a sense that this is a real make or break night for both of us,” he said.
“ I won’t be doing what I did last time. I made a slow start and it was still a close fight. If I can come flying out of the blocks then I know I’ve got the tools to beat him.
“He is going to be strong, so I am prepared to go the distance and slug it out. If it comes earlier then so be it, but I’m leaving nothing in the dressing room.”
Daws, who first won the title at York Hall three years ago, says he is in the best shape ever for a fight that could define his career and lead to a golden twilight for the Morden mauler.
He is expected to have a large contingent of home fans and admits he can’t wait to get it on having spent the past six weeks sparring with Commonwealth welterweight champion John O’Donnell.
“This is a big opportunity for me. You say you are in the best shape before each fight, but I’ve learnt my preparations over a long time and genuinely feel better than I have ever done,” he added.
“The week before seems to go so slowly. I don’t do a lot of training to conserve energy, which means you are just itching to go come fight night. I just can’t wait to get going now.
“It is just a shame we couldn’t get this rematch on sooner.”
