The Wimbledon Racquets & Fitness Club hosted the U19s English Open Badminton Championships at the weekend, with the cream of the nation’s junior talent trying to impress the national selectors and earn a place in the team for the World Junior Championships, to be held in Malaysia in November.

Danish players dominated the men's events, winning the singles and doubles tournaments and finishing as losing finalists in the mixed doubles.

Home club member Toby Penty lost his singles semi-final by the narrowest of margins to the eventual winner, Flemming Quach. Flemming overcame his teammate Morten Brodbaek in three games in a fast-moving final.

The men's doubles was also an all-Danish affair, but Morten Bodskov and Jakob Staael had little difficulty in retaining their title over the tired and injured Quach and Brodbaek.

Morten Bodskov, with new partner Louise Jakobsen, was unable to retain his mixed doubles title, losing to England's Mark Middleton and Alyssa Lim 21/16, 21/17.

English players were dominant in the women's events, Sarah Milne overcoming top-seeded Panuga Riou, of Hampshire, 21/15, 21/15 in a hard-fought battle.

Sarah then paired up with Jessica Fletcher in what was the longest match of the day, finally losing out to Alex Langley and Lauren Smith 21/14, 10/21, 23/21 .
