Wimbledon Racquets & Fitness Club in Cranbrook Road, hosted the U19 Open Championships at the weekend, writes Val Andrews.
The cream of English youngsters were hoping to impress the selectors and earn a place in the team for the forthcoming World Junior Championship in Malaysia in November.
The draw included six players from the regular visitors from Denmark, Aarhus Elite together with two competitors from Spain and one from Bulgaria.
The Danish players dominated the men’s events.
Wimbledon’s Toby Penty was pipped in his singles semi-final by eventual winner Flemming Quach.
An all-Danish final saw Quach beat Morten Brodbaek, who was struggling with a thigh strain, 21-17 14-21 21-13 The men’s doubles was also an all-Danish affair but Morten Bodskov and Jakob Staael had little difficulty in beating the tired and injured Quach and Brodbaek 21-9 21-7.
Bodskov, with new partner Louise Jakobsen, was unable to retain his mixed doubles title losing 21-16 21-17 to England’s Mark Middleton and Alyssa Lim.
English players dominated the women’s events.
Sarah Milne beat top seed Panuga Riou of Hampshire 21-15 21-15 in a hard fought singles battle.
Milne then paired up with Jessica Fletcher for the longest match of the day losing 21-14 10-21 23-21 to Alex Langley and Lauren Smith in the pairs final.
