Croydon Harrier Shirin Irving moved up to second in the UK rankings for pentathlon this year when he smashed the club's record at the Surrey Multi Events and Steeplechase Championships on Saturday.

The 12-year-old was one of six Harriers that made the journey to Broadbridge Heath to compete and all of them came back with medals.

Irving scored a total of 2464 points in the pentathlon, in which she took part in the long lump (4.72m), 70m hurdles (12.48 seconds), shot put (9.80m), high jump (1.45m) and 800m (2.58.90 minutes), to finish 470 points ahead of second place and set a championship best performance.

U20 pole vault specialist Ned Quiney took the Surrey decathlon title, taking part in the 100m (12.31 seconds), long jump (6.07m), shot put (9.34m), high jump (1.87m), 400m (55.16 seconds), 110m hurdles (17.79 seconds), discus (25.52m) pole vault (4.50m), javelin (33.83m) and 1500m (5.39.10 minutes) and scoring 5308 points to set another club record.

U13 boys Stirling Gibbons and Joshua Haasz had a good tussle in their pentathlon in which Gibbons prevailed to take silver.

He scored 1545 points for the third Croydon Harriers record, with Haasz taking the bronze with a score of 1453 points.

The county steeplechase championships we held concurrently with senior Terry Lapins and U17 Mark Plackett winning gold and silver respectively.

Trinity boy Plackett ran particularly well to clip his personal best by some 10 seconds to 5.08.2 minutes for his run over 1500m while Lapins covered his 3000m challenge in 13.23.6 minutes.
