Ranelagh Harriers went two better than last year when they took the gold medals in the senior women's event at the Surrey road relay championships at Wimbledon Park last Saturday.

But the Petersham-based squad only came to the fore on the last of the four legs.

On the opening three mile leg, Jo Ronaldson (17:03), clocking the third fastest time of the day brought them in behind South London Harriers' Georgie Bruinvels (16:05), who posted the fastest women's time. Karen Ellison (17:20) was third for Herne Hill.

Veteran former international Ceri Diss (17:36) stormed round the second leg to take Herne Hill into a 10 seconds lead over South London Harriers' Ruth Hutton (19:01) with Marie Synnott-Wells (18:16) slipping to third for Ranelagh and Isabell Brinsden (17:37) lifting Epsom & Ewell from seventh to fourth.

Becky Woodland (17:44) got South London Harriers back in front on the penultimate stage with Estelle Damant (18:14) moving through to second place 43 seconds behind the leaders. Julia Wedmore (20:09) slipped to third place for Herne Hill.

Liz Kipling (17:44) proved too strong for South London's Pippa Major (18:57) on the anchor stage and crossed the line half-a-minute clear in 1:11:17. Emily Alden (16:51), clocking the second fastest time of the day, overtook Herne Hill to secure the bronze medals for Epsom & Ewell.

Herne Hill's veterans continued their impressive string of performances by lifting the Surrey men's over 40 title.
