Lenny Daws is targeting a Lonsdale Belt after regaining the British Light-Welterweight title in real style last Friday.
Daws produced a powerhouse display to knock out Barry Morrison in the tenth round of their Bethnal Green clash, avenging his split-decision points loss to the same fighter in January 2007.
And the Morden fighter was in bullish mood after his title triumph, setting his sights on the Lonsdale honour, awarded to fighters who make two successful defences of their title.
Daws said: “I’m back where I belong.
“It has been a while but now I’m back in business.
“I know my promoter Mick Hennessey is talking about the European title but to me the Lonsdale Belt is all that matters.
“I had the British title before and it was taken away from me and I do not want that to happen again, and a permanent belt would be a dream come true.”
The 30-year-old came out quickly and gradually wore down Morrison with an all-action performance, flooring his rival in the eighth before the Scot stayed down for the full count two rounds later.
Daws added: “I knew I had to start quickly as that is what cost me last time.
“I could hear him breathing heavily quite early on and I knew it was only a matter of time before I got him.
“When he went down in the eighth I knew I had it won, and it was great to finish it with a bang.
“As he went down on one knee in the tenth I looked into his eyes and I knew he wasn’t going to get up, and that was a great feeling.”
The light-welterweight division in stock-piled with talent in this country, with Junior Witter, Ajose Olusegun and even Ricky Hatton within its ranks, and Daws admits his future will be far from an easy ride.
He added: “It is a very tough weight category and it will be tough whoever I come up against.
“A lot of the fighters are so evenly matched that any fight would be close.
“But this is where I want to be and I am loving it.
“I will take a couple of weeks off now to relax and then gently get back into training, and I would hope to be back in action early in the new year.”
