Tony Owen insists he is in no rush to move up a level despite extending the unbeaten start to his career to four fights last weekend.

The Carshalton lightweight produced another assured display as he ended the unbeaten record of Ben Lawler at Bethnal Green, earning a comfortable 40-35 verdict over four rounds.

And the 22-year-old revealed he is more than happy to bide his time.

Owen said: “I have time on my side and there is still an awful lot to learn.

“Things are going nicely and all I want to do is keep fighting and keep improving.

“All the matchmaking is down to my management and I am more than happy to trust them.

“For now I just want to keep busy and leave everything else to them.”

Owen had his rival wobbling in the first round as he eased to victory at York Hall, and although he was unable to force a stoppage was satisfied with his efforts.

He added: “I caught him with a few good shots in the first round and after that he just wanted to survive.

“With his record I was expecting a tough fight, but I was really confident going into the ring and I was very happy with how things went.”

The lightweight combines his boxing with his regular job as a bricklayer - a decision that entails Owen rising at 5am each morning to train before heading to work, then putting in another stint of training in the early evening before hitting the sack at 9.30pm.

The Carshalton fighter also gets financial backing from Astral Conservatories, and he admits there is no room for slackness in his programme.

Owen added: “It is tough and you are expected to make a lot of sacrifices.

“It can be difficult seeing all your friends head out when you are going to bed at the weekend, but this is what I want to do and I will do what it takes to succeed. ”
