New signing Matt James admits he is taking a massive step into the unknown by moving down to London - but insists it will do his career the world of good.

The 22-year-old prop arrives at the Stoop from the Bradford Bulls after signing a two-year-deal late last week.

And the Wakefield-based player, who has been with the Bulls for the past seven years, is looking forward to the challenge.

James said: “It is a massive thing for me to be moving to London as I am totally uprooting.

“I have lived up north my whole life and coming to London is bound to be a culture shock.

“But I needed a new direction in my career and I need to get back on track, and Quins have given me that opportunity.”

James has worked with coach Brian McDermott before, the Harlequins boss overseeing the forward’s early development at Eastmoor.

And the prop, who has endured a frustrating 2009 thanks to a wrist injury, cannot wait to renew his acquaintance.

He added: “Brian coached me from about eight years old and he was a major part in my development.

“I got on really well with him, and as soon as he got in touch with my agent I needed no second invitation.”

Bradford, along with Quins, suffered frustrating seasons, with neither side advancing to the Super League play-offs.

But James insists there is plenty to be optimistic about at the Stoop.

He added: “Quins started the season really well but then they just seemed to take their foot off the gas.

“I think injuries played their part, and in this game when you lose momentum it is very hard to regain it.

“But there are a lot of good young players at the club, and I am really looking forward to playing my part.”
